WiMAX backhaul
seamless backhaul that maintains service level agreements
The ability for service providers to offer consumers a greater range of high-speed data services has led to a key business opportunity and an important revenue stream. However, the increasing demand for such services has placed additional pressure on the service provider’s access network.
To ensure continued reliability, and maintain a high quality service, it is important that a service provider is able to evolve their network in an efficient and cost effective manner. One area of particular focus is the emerging trend for service providers to self-provision their WiMAX backhaul networks, thus diminishing the reliance on leased lines and reducing capital and operational expenditure.
- The network challenge
- For those operators offering WiFi, WiMAX or other ‘last mile’ solutions, the challenge remains to ensure seamless backhaul operations that meet agreed service level agreements, provide the required high capacity and maintain a low cost per connection. Additionally, with radio spectrum a scarce resource, efficient management of the allocated spectrum is required.
- The VectaStar solution
- Cambridge Broadband Networks’ VectaStar range of products provides a comprehensive solution to address these issues. Operating in the standard ETSI 3.5GHz, 10.5GHz, and 26GHz frequency bands, VectaStar can achieve throughputs of up to 60Mbps in a 14MHz channel. Key product features include:
- Simultaneous support for multiple service types, IP, E1 and TDM.
- Low latency – ideal for voice-carrying networks.
- Multi-frequency platform – 3.5GHz, 10.5GHz and 26GHz.
- Fully symmetric radio links (power, modulation and bandwidth).
- Class leading spectral efficiency (up to 4bps/Hz net).
A VectaStar CPE co-located with a WiFi ‘hotspot’ or WiMAX base station can seamlessly backhaul traffic to a wide area network (WAN). This deployment of high capacity CPEs, combined with the large number of CPEs supported by each VectaStar base station (more than 200), allow operators to maintain an overall low cost per connection.

- Operator’s view
- Sentech “As the only operator to have a licence in the 3.5GHz spectrum band, it is vital that we maximise the use of this scarce resource, and we are confident that we are achieving this objective with our choice of equipment vendor.”
- Mediaserv “We chose Cambridge Broadband Networks’ VectaStar equipment because it is the only product on the market that combines a high data rate of 60Mbps, quality of service management and real non-line-of-sight coverage.”
